Miss Hong Kong 1948

Date: July 18
Venue: Hong Kong Ritz Garden Nightclub

WINNER - 司馬音 (鄧波) SIMA Yin

The third year of the contest went back to the original place it was held, the HK Ritz Garden Nightclub, only this time the club was the sole organizer of the pageant.  There were 12 entries this year, doubling the embarrasing six the year before.  The judging this year was changed to try to promote the pageant to a higher status.  An audience voting system was divised.  The audience's vote would comprise 50% of the contestant's score and the judging panel the other 50%.  Ticket prices to the pageant were $3.00, but the voting system still attracted a lot of people.
The audience vote, however turned into a fiasco (such a fiasco that the pageant would be put on hiatus for the next 3 years!) when one person voted over 300 times for a delegate who was dubbed as 'not top 3 material'.  This contestant wasn't scored high by the judging panel but still wound up with over 500 points whereas the judges choice, Sima Yin, only had an already high score of 371.  The judges still went with their vote, crowning Sima Yin, ignoring the audience's vote whiched caused an uproar among the crowd.  Some people taking advantage of this to start a riot ended up pushing reporters and spectators into the swimming pool!!!
Sima Yin wasn't truly from Hong Kong.  She was born in Jiangsu, China and studied abroad at a music
school in Japan. She was well-known in Japan and even opened a few concerts.  Afterwards, she returned to Shanghai and had a few albums come out.  When she entered the Miss HK contest, she entered under the name 'Tang Boh-Yee'.  She did many mandarin films over the next couple of years and married a wealthy professor and moved to Japan.
