The very first Miss Hong Kong contest was held in 1946.  Even though the war was already over, Hong Kong was still in turbulent times.  This was the first pageant ever held in Hong Kong.  The contest was sponsored by the Hong Kong Chinese Amateur Swimming Society and the British Airforce Club, but the real organizer of the pageant was the owner of the Hong Kong Ritz Garden Nightclub, Lee Choy-Fat.

The pageant at the time was very simple. All the contestants needed to do was put on a swimsuit and display poise.  Then the several so-called 'judges' would pick their favorite.  There were supposed to be 17 contestants, but on the day of the pageant only 11 contestants walked out on stage.  There were 20 judges in all which outnumbered the contestants.  The contest was held outdoors poolside.  The capacity was 1,700 but there were over 2,000 in attendance.  The only contest rules were that the contestants were between the ages of 16 and 60 and to wear a swimsuit.  The judging criteria was 40 points for figure, 40 points for beauty and 20 points for poise.

Lee Lan's real name was Leung Suk-Chun. She was born into a small family in Guangzhou, China, but due to hard times changed her name to Chan Yuen-Hung and moved to Hong Kong to work as a hotel receptionist. Chun didn't want to work there forever,  so she decided to enter the Miss Hong Kong contest which she heard from her friend to try to make something of herself.  She entered the contest under the assumed name Lee Lan. After winning the title and 23 at the time, she propelled herself into a career in films.  Her first film "Love Flame" (starring Ng Chor-Fan) was the first Hong Kong film since the war.  She did many films over the years and was even the first woman ever to star in one of the Wong Fei-Hung films.  Another film worth mentioning is the one she did in 1947 called "Storm in the City" where she starred along with Miss Shanghai 1945 Xie Jia-Hua.  She ended up marrying Leung, an amusement park manager.
